How Filson makes his coats and other outerwear

“Everyone has a Filson story.”

This is what Alex Carleton, Creative Director at Filson, says in the last episode of the Popular mechanics “DONE HERE” series. Customers of the outdoor clothing and gear maker have testified to how Filson’s gear has helped them survive the elements after disasters such as plane crashes exposed them to freezing temperatures.

?? You like badass equipment. U.S. too. Let’s discuss it together.

Credit the longtime business — and we mean long-dedication to his profession.

The pioneering Alaskan clothing and blanket makers of CC Filson were started in 1897 as an outfitter for people working in the forestry industry. Over the past century and more, the Seattle-based company, which still retains its original headquarters, has evolved to produce luggage, workwear for men and women, hunting and camping gear, and even dog accessories.

“We really think about the function, the end use,” Carleton says. “It almost goes beyond style. Style is the by-product of the equipment and products that are really designed to work outdoors.

Take the Mackinaw Cruiser Jacket, for example, which Filson has produced for over 100 years. It has a full-width pocket on the entire back for storing maps and charts, which is convenient for surveyors and prospectors.

“A lot of the elements of this jacket are also very goal oriented, so it has been functional for its [intended] use and has not changed, ”says Jaron Danioth, manager of the Filson clothing plant.

Carleton echoes these sentiments. “There is only one core of the brand which is monolithic,” he says. “It doesn’t change. It is something that people can always count on and it goes against the trend. It’s just a really strong brand that I think is likely to be around for another century.
