The Sanitation Department is hosting a children’s bike exchange on Saturday as part of an outdoor fair to educate children about recycling in Long Island City.
DonateNYC, an initiative of DSNY, is hosting the “Kids Reuse Fair” focused on recycling, exchanging and reusing baby and children’s items with CultureLab LIC at the Plaxall Gallery, located at 5-25 46th Ave. from noon to 4 p.m.
The free event, which is part of the department’s NYCxReuse programming, also features a variety of educational, arts and crafts activities and lessons, fundraising, and bike exchange.
For the exchange of bikes, the organizer, Kids Ride Club, invites parents to bring bikes that their children have outgrown to exchange with other parents. Children will be fitted with an appropriately sized bicycle and helmet, and at 3:30 p.m. the Kids Ride Club will be offering inspected bikes to those who cannot exchange them. Bike clothing and accessories will also be priced at $ 5 per item.
Parents are also encouraged to bring clean, lightly used plastic toys to the fair to donate to children in need. Second Chance Toys will collect the toys and deliver them to children in need for the holidays. The effort is aimed at keeping plastic toys out of landfills and teaching children about generosity.
Participants can also pick up a free reusable bag and coloring bag, play the “Track Your Trash” electronic game, and participate in educational games and activities to earn prizes.
The event is free and open to the public.
